Short answer. Jira Cloud exports search results as CSV, not as an Excel workbook. Run your search, click Export and choose Export Excel CSV; up to 10,000 work items go into one file. If you need a real .xlsx with dates as dates, issue keys as links and a frozen header, use an app that builds the workbook — for example ours, ArtUp Reports.
1. Jira's built-in export: Excel CSV
- Open Filters (or the issue search) and run the query you need — a saved filter or JQL such as
project = ABC AND status != Done. - Click Export above the results.
- Choose one of the CSV options:
- Export Excel CSV (all fields) — every field of each work item;
- Export Excel CSV (current fields) — only the columns shown in your list view;
- Export Excel CSV (filter fields) — the columns saved with the filter (shown when you run a saved filter).
- Open the file in Excel.
The same menu offers Google Sheets, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel (Open in Microsoft Excel), XML and form data. Source: Atlassian, Export your search results, checked 2026-10-17.
How many work items fit in one export
Atlassian supports up to 10,000 work items with the asynchronous Export CSV in the issue search. For more, Atlassian's own advice is to split the JQL into batches of fewer than 10,000 — by project, date range, work type or status — export each, merge the files and check that the batch totals add up to the total of the original query. The older trick of editing the export URL's pager parameter is deprecated since March 2026. Source: Atlassian KB, Export over 10,000 work items in Jira Cloud, checked 2026-10-17.
Common problems with the CSV
- Everything lands in one column. Excel splits a CSV by your system's list separator; if that is a semicolon, a comma-separated file opens as one column. Use Data → From Text/CSV in Excel and pick the comma as the delimiter instead of double-clicking the file.
- Dates or numbers look wrong. A CSV is plain text with no column types: Excel guesses each column from your regional settings. In the From Text/CSV import, set the type of each date column yourself.
- A custom field is missing. Current fields exports only the columns of your list view. Add the field as a column first, or use all fields.
- Issue keys are not clickable. CSV has no links; the key is text. You can rebuild links with Excel's
HYPERLINK()formula and your site URL. - Atlassian also warns that uploading a CSV to a spreadsheet app can run macros — open files only from sources you trust. (Atlassian)
2. A real .xlsx with ArtUp Reports
ArtUp Reports is our app for Jira Cloud. It builds the Excel workbook in your browser from the issues you can see, so the file is formatted when it opens.
- In the issue search open Apps → Export to Excel, Word or PDF (or Export board issues on a board, backlog or sprint).
- Keep the current search as the source, or pick a saved filter or JQL.
- Choose Excel and a column set: Issue list, Work logs, Comments or Sprint summary.
- Add any field as a column, including custom fields; drag columns to reorder them and check the preview of the first issues.
- Click Export. The .xlsx downloads; the result screen lists every warning, for example a column that does not exist on your site.
| Jira CSV export | ArtUp Reports .xlsx | |
|---|---|---|
| Dates and numbers | Text; Excel guesses the type | Real date and number cells |
| Issue keys | Text | Links to the issues |
| Header | Plain first row | Frozen, with filters; column widths fit the data |
| Rows | One per work item | One per issue, per work log or per comment; sheets split by a field; optional Summary sheet |
| Size | Up to 10,000 per file (Atlassian) | No fixed limit for Excel; 10,003 issues measured in 11.8 s |
Measured On 30 September 2026, the app's own export pipeline exported 10,003 issues to Excel in 11.8 seconds on a Jira Cloud test site; we read the file back and found 10,003 rows and 10,003 issue links. Time depends on your site and network.
Limits worth knowing: in Jira's new issue search, Jira does not pass ticked issues to apps, so the export takes the whole search — narrow the JQL (for example key in (ABC-1, ABC-2)) to export a subset. The app reads Jira with your permissions and never writes to Jira; issue content is not sent to ArtUp Labs. Details are in the ArtUp Reports documentation.
